What are radiator humidifiers?

Radiator humidifiers are devices which combat dry air by raising humidity levels in homes, essentially they are water containers with absorbent pads which are hung over radiators with hooks.

The humidifier pads soak up water from the reservoir giving a large surface area in which to evaporate the water. When the radiator is on, the water heats up and evaporates into the air which raises humidity levels, the humidifiers need to be refilled once or twice a day depending on conditions.

There are a wide variety of designs and materials that these humidifiers are made from, the best are made from metal as they transmit the heat more efficiently and will last a lifetime, plastic radiator humidifiers are also very good and are more cost effective. Ceramic radiator humidifiers are best avoided as they do not evaporate much water so are more ornamental rather than useful.

Radiator humidifiers are the most environmentally friendly humidifiers in existence. They work naturally and do not use any electricity and they work just when you need them… in the heating season when radiators are on and the air is driest.

Why do we need radiator humidifiers?

In the winter, and especially when the heating is on, humidity levels in the UK can drop to as low as 20%-30%rH, this has a detrimental effect on people and plants and also on furniture, musical instruments and electronic equipment, high levels of static are associated with low relative humidity.

The human body is most comfortable when the relative humidity is between 40% to 60%rH, when humidity levels drop below that level skin and eyes will dry out causing irritation, low humidity levels also exacerbate coughing and wheezing and can make symptoms of asthma and allergy much worse.

At low humidity levels plants will dry out fast, paint and wood will contract and crack, musical instruments will go out of tune and you can experience unpleasant static electric shocks, because of this static problem, low humidity levels can also damage electronics such as computers and televisions.

Using a radiator humidifier is a great way to provide the extra moisture needed in the air to combat these dry air problems and to make our home environment more pleasant to live in.

The Casana 30cm also has 1 evaporative pad and a water capacity of 0.8 litres but is made from white powder coated metal and has front water filling and a visual filling gauge.

The Casana 60cm has the same features as the 30cm model but has a larger 1.6 litres capacity and is the top of the range model.
